Today was our first full day in NOLA. It was filled with fun and surprises. We saw the beautiful St. Louis cathedral, followed by the Old Ursuline Convent. The St. Louis cathedral was breath taking. The Catholics know how to build a cathedral! The convent had the oldest wooden stairs in the world. I am not a history person but there were some interesting history lessons learned about the nuns of the covenant. After we were escorted to the French market. There were several little merchants. They bring their work to sell. We are told there are not as many people as normal because the weather is so cold. It’s not as cold to us because we are used to much colder weather but it is chilly and I still need a coat on. We only take a few minutes because we are starving. We don’t know what to eat or where anything is located. We stop in one of the first places we find. It looks really fancy. Place settings are all out. Fresh white linens cover the tables. Small plates and glasses for water and wine are set. I chose to split a meal because we were getting ready to go on a cuisine tour. Our food was so delicious I was thoroughly impressed. It was only a bacon cheeseburger and fries but the seasoning was different than I was used. The fries were perfectly cooked. Not one was burnt or soggy. Next up was my favorite part of the day the cuisine tour. It took us three hours to get through with it. It was my favorite because I got to sample foods that I normally would not have ordered or tried. There was some that I knew I would not like but I was open to trying them anyways. First up was the po boy from Tujagues.

It was beef brisket with tomatoes and horseradish on French bread. The brisket itself was not bad nor the bread. I discovered I don’t it like horseradish. It has a spiced kick to it and just taste weird. This location also harbored the Bar that was shipped in 1855-56 from Paris. It was already 100 years old when it got here. It is older than the US. The bar is also the oldest stand up bar in the US. It has Never had a bar stool. I didn’t even notice that there were no bar stools at the bar untold she pointed it out. Next stop was red beans and rice.

They were delicious. My absolute favorite is the entire tour. My mom always loved red beans and rice and they made me think of her. She would love all the food I tried on this trip and the food I won’t try. We also had shrimp gumbo at Antoine’s restaurant which was okay. The restaurant itself was awesome. I loved the room that held the the queens crowns and gowns of the King Festival.

We stopped briefly for a little sweet praline. I learned that we pronounce the name wrong and bacon pecan brittle is excellent. Last on the tour was turtle soup and creole mustard shrimp. The shrimp was good on the toasted bread. I tried a small bite of turtle soup. Omg! I just couldn’t. The look, the smell, the taste was just awful. It was still the funnest thing going to different restaurants and trying new foods!!
