Outer Journey-01/06/18

Today was a free day and we got to explore New Orleans on our own.  I was most excited about going to the Garden District to explore this day.  The Garden District did not disappoint.  It is probably not the best time of year to visit because everything is not in full bloom, but it was still beautiful.  We were dropped off on Magazine Street to begin the days journey.  The air felt a little lighter here.  There was the hustle and bustle of people, but the atmosphere was different.  There was not homeless people sitting out on the street, no playing of live music, and not as many people smoking.  I felt like I was a little more at home.  The streets did not feel as dirty either.  The little shops felt more of higher class than the ones that felt more touristy around Decatur Street.  After we did some shopping I really wanted to see the home that Sandra Bullock had purchased and the big oak trees that attract people to the Garden District.

We typed in the address we found on Google and decided we would hoof it through the neighborhoods of the Garden District to find her home.  I am sure that we looked out of place.  Here was four girls walking the bumpy, uneven sidewalks of the Garden District with sacks hanging from their wrists.  The neighborhoods were very quiet, not like the hustle and bustle we have been use to seeing and hearing here in what I call downtown.  It was difficult trudging through the sidewalks of the Garden Districts.  For as big and beautiful as most of the homes were you would think that they would care just as much as the sidewalks that ran along their homes.  Some of the side walk was brick, but it was never even brick.  There were bricks that would be missing, and sometimes there would be sections that would have nothing but sand and dirt.  Then there were some that contained cement, but that was not even ground either.  I don't know if the sidewalks are messed up from Katrina or they have always been that unsettled.

At one point I felt like a little kid out playing with my friends in the neighborhood and we were on a scavenger hunt trying to find our final destination.  We were having so much fun just doing what we wanted on our own time.  To be young again and not have to worry about time, destinations, or any other care of the world!

Just leaning on a giant oak tree.  Look how uneven the grounds were.

Finally we reached Sandra Bullocks home!  It was extravagant.  There was so many trees and bushes that covered the gated home that it was hard to see most of the house.  However we were able to catch most of the top of the home and took a picture at the front gate.  I was so excited.  I love Sandra Bullock and I loved her home.  It was a huge Victorian Style home.  We walked along her fence line to her backyard hoping to catch a better glimpse of the home.  Needles to say the Garden District did not disappoint.  If I every came to New Orleans again this would be a place I would want to visit.
